Bending Bamboo

Raw bamboo is quite flexible, but as it dries bamboo becomes stiff. However, there are several techniques that can be used to bend them into shape.

One way, which is good for smaller poles, is to heat the area where you want to bend the pole. This is most effectively done with a gas torch or blowtorch, but can be done over a stove for small projects (please be careful).

Hold the item over the heat for several seconds, twisting it (or moving the torch) if possible. Remove, and immediately bend it into shape. To bend further, re-apply heat and repeat.

When the bamboo cools (after a minute or so) it’ll retain the shape bent into.

Another method, for larger poles, is to remove a triangular area of the pole, and bend it over. You’ll need to fix the bend with something like rope, twine or glue. When bending, best to apply some heat.
