One more Indian note.
The main bamboo being targeted for industrial processing in India is bambusa bambos, but I also found it used in a decorative setting, at the Chennai Marriott. As you can see from the photo, it has something in common with the Chinese Mao bamboo as far as size goes, but it has more of a waist and thicker knots. The result is a more tropical look. When India relaxes its restrictions on bamboo, I look forward to importing some of these poles.
There was also some bambusa bambos decorating the bar, but when I went back a few days later to photograph it, it was gone. The waitress was a bit confused by my asking, “Where’s your bamboo?” You meet a new kind of insanity every day, I guess she was thinking. Anyway, she was a good sport. She asked her manager who said it had been taken away to be painted.
